We've all had to deal with coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, rashes or other skin irritations, and even hives. And why? Usually our body is allergic to some substances that cause irritating and sometimes painful symptoms.
Whether it's pet dander, dust, chocolate, or that lovely yellow dusty substance we like to call pollen, most people have to deal with an allergy to one thing or another. Being allergic to dust or pollen or certain types of food seems common these days, but can you imagine being allergic to anything else? I mean... the sun? Here is a list of the top ten weirdest allergies.
10. Wood
Tree allergies can definitely be a problem. Along with a tree allergy, you won't be able to touch paper, use a pencil, or be a woodcutter! The allergy can be so severe that it can cause the skin to look like it's burned. In most cases, wood allergy causes skin irritation, coughing, sneezing and hives.
9. Plastic
I can't imagine being allergic to plastic in today's world. As more and more everyday items are turned into plastic items for recycling, being allergic to plastic must be a hindrance. These allergies usually cause skin irritation such as rash, swelling, redness or itching.
8. Nickel – Nickel dermatitis
Although it is not a rare allergy, it has become more recognized as the use of mobile phones and other technical devices has increased rapidly. As more people use cell phones and iPods, the incidence of nickel allergy is increasing worldwide. An allergy to nickel can make life difficult because many everyday items commonly contain it.
7. Caffeine
Caffeine intolerance is a very common disease. However, there are people who cannot consume the smallest amount of caffeine without experiencing life-threatening allergic reactions. We all know that caffeine is a miracle drug when we need a little energy boost during the day. Those allergic to caffeine may experience delusions, anxiety attacks, hallucinations, muscle spasms, rashes, hives, palpitations, and blurred vision. Some even experience seizures that can be fatal.
6. Kissing
Sometimes a kiss isn't just a kiss. No, we're not talking about declining marriage either. Although this allergy does not mean that one is allergic to someone else's lips or tongue, the person who suffers from this allergy is usually someone who has severe food or drug allergies. Due to the close contact and sharing of saliva, food particles or drug particles can remain in the mouth and cause an allergic reaction in some.
5. Computers – Electromagnetic
However, computer users complain of nasal congestion, sneezing, itching and even headaches after using the computer. Fortunately, the levels of chemicals usually decrease after the computer is used for a longer period of time.
4. Exercise – Anaphylaxis
You've probably heard someone joke that they're allergic to exercise because it's just funny and probably because they're lazy. However, some actually have a real allergy that causes them to be allergic to exercise. Only 1,000 people are said to be allergic. This allergy, called exercise-induced anaphylaxis, is felt only after someone eats a certain type of food, such as peanuts, and goes to exercise. That person can easily eat peanuts without any reaction, but when exercise is added, the person may experience fainting, vomiting, and difficulty breathing.
3. Cold - Familial Cold Auto-inflammatory
Many people do not like being in the cold, but imagine being allergic to it. Cold weather will trigger the body to release histamine, which causes skin rashes, hives, redness and swelling. This condition can be fatal, especially if it goes undiagnosed, as most people can occasionally swim in a cold pool or take a cool shower.
2. Sun – Erythropoietic protoporphyria
It is very rare for people to be allergic to the sun, but allergies do exist. Medically known as solar urticaria. Most people with sun allergies are advised to limit their exposure and use sunscreen.
1. Water – Aquagenic Urticaria
Known as aquagenic urticaria, the condition is said to affect only one in 23 million people worldwide. Allergies to water are extremely rare, and most people who are allergic to it stay at home. Having an allergy to water means having an allergy to sweat, tears, and even foods that contain water, such as juices, tea, and coffee. A person is sensitive to the ions in undistilled water, so most must be very careful when drinking water or they drink undistilled water.
